When Ben Franklin founded America’s first lending library, the predecessor to free public libraries, he undoubtedly had no clue how technology would intersect with shelves lined in pen-and-ink resources. As of 2012, CFgear has helped meet the technology needs of a number of libraries—a fairly high number, actually: 350 and counting. From small local libraries to the Library of Congress, we’ve helped meet needs for custom library flash drives from sea to shining sea.

Even if you’re not a librarian, understanding the reasons our custom USB flash drives are helping meet the needs of these institutions might shed some light on how they can benefit your business, nonprofit organization, or special interest group.

Library Challenges

People don’t just go to the library to borrow books or utilize hard copy resources anymore. Many people use technology resources they don’t otherwise have available. Other than printing out information, many are at a loss of how to save the information they find. Of course, libraries can’t allow all customers to save files onto their computers, particularly due to security concerns and practical storage limitations. Many libraries do have CD or floppy disc drives, but there are problems with both of those options. Between compatibility and availability, the issues libraries face with both CDs and floppy disc drives have been never ceasing. continue

While many teachers can probably imagine the many ways that bulk flash drives can decrease their work loads and help students streamline projects, USB flash drives can benefit absent students, as well.

Many students miss school due to illness, leave early for extracurricular events, and occasionally miss class for other reasons. Some students have special needs that make them home-bound for long periods of time. Such situations often require teachers to collect classwork, write lengthy explanations of requirements, and print extra sets of notes. Sometimes, teacher descriptions end up being less-than-legible, hand-scrawled notes hurriedly penned between classes.

Even when legible and thorough documentation is sent home, students lack the full benefit of being part of the class lecture or discussion. When students are faced with the hodgepodge of packets from each teacher, it can be overwhelming and difficult to wade through. Sometimes, negative results include lower grades or even dropping out. continue

Parties come and go. They mark milestones and share memories. From birthday celebrations to baby showers, favors are great reminders of the memories and times shared together with friends and family. Depending on the event, it can be difficult to find a favor that accommodates everyone at the party. The host should have a universal favor that all attendees can enjoy. Customized USB drives are a personal and universal gift for everyone at the event.

While bags of jelly beans or personalized tea candles are common favors at parties, the candy is often gone before the event is over and the knick-knacks are thrown into a junk drawer. Give your guests a meaningful and useful gift with a personalized USB flash drive. The flash drive can be preloaded with a special message, photographs, or any other memorabilia that would be relevant to the guests. The USB drive can be customized with the party date, theme, graphic or logo, or even a thank you message. continue

As caps are thrown and hugs are shared, a high school or college graduation is filled with thousands of memories. Many of these memories include childhood friends that are going to be moving hours away to college. Some of these classmates are joining the Army and deploying. Others may be sticking around your home town looking for a job. Wherever paths may take you, your last few hours together as classmates are memories to be cherished.

Many times the professional taking video of these moments during the commencement ceremony will offer an option to purchase a CD or DVD of the video. Usually these DVDs range anywhere from $40-$100 depending on the length of the ceremony. While it is a nice gift idea, realistically a DVD or CD doesn’t hold the life span that a flash drive would. continue

organize your wedding with flash drivesAs an engaged couple sits to plan their entire wedding, there are many choices and decisions to be made. The decisions range from the caterer, DJ, photographer, pianist, colors, wedding party, and so on. Usually, the one that stands out the most above others in their field will get the job.

Often times, the couple will meet with a few different photographers before making a decision. Usually, these meetings involve the photographer bringing 10 different photo albums and frames to show off his/her previous work. They are usually heavy and difficult to carry around from place to place. The couple will have to huddle together to look at the same picture.

Couples will also meet with several different caterers who will sit and discuss prices, ingredients, meats, and many other options. They will usually bring folders of papers that hold this information. continue

Car Owners Manual on a USB DriveIf you have ever purchased a new vehicle, you know that the glove box is shoved full of paper work, an owner’s manual, and, usually, an information manual. The owner’s manual is roughly around 2 inches thick and jam packed with a lot of information. Rather than take up space in the glove box with a thick, heavy book, automobile companies could utilize the convenience of a flash drive.

The owner’s manual could be uploaded onto a flash drive. CFgear could customize a flash drive that would store all the necessary information, along with pictures. There is also the possibility of uploading instructional videos on how to use certain options within the vehicle.

Some companies, such as Jeep, have taken the earth friendly initiative and have published their owner’s manual onto CDs. However, by placing their owner’s manual onto a flash drive, they can offer the option for the vehicle owner to add data onto the drive. The owner could keep track of their oil changes, maintenance, tire rotations, and any other service on the flash drive. This would allow them to have a record of the date and maintenance performed. This record often comes in handy years later when it is time to trade the vehicle in. continue

add cake recipes to flash drivesWith most restaurant meals costing $10 or more, many people would like the option to create these same recipes at home. Sometimes restaurants offer recipes on their web-sites that can be printed out. Many people save these recipes to their hard drives and waste valuable computer space. Other times, restaurants will offer a cookbook that weighs a couple pounds and isn’t always well organized.

Usually, when you print out the recipe or get the book home, it doesn’t hold up very well. Sitting on a counter amidst the stove, sink, and refrigerator, the fragile pieces of paper become wet and stained. Another option that could be offered is a flash drive jam-packed with favorite recipes. Restaurants and caterers could take advantage of this unique way to sell their recipes.

Organizations such as churches, the American Cancer Society, and even ladies auxiliaries are always creating cook books for fundraisers. Rather than wasting money on paper, ink, and bounding services, they could have all of the members’ favorite recipes compiled onto a flash drive. The recipes could be organized and easily viewed by the purchaser. continue

One thing that most people can agree on is that a good vacation is always appreciated. While some people like to lay on the beach for hours, others may enjoy hitting up landmarks along the shore. Whether it is a museum, historical landmark, or hall of fame, visitors always love to take home a souvenir. Some popular souvenirs include magnets, key chains, postcards, and even little trinkets. Many people pay $7.99 for a simple key chain for a little remembrance of their family vacation to Florida.

On vacation, people often take hundreds of pictures to preserve their memories. Sometimes these pictures turn out really well. Other times indoor pictures will be too dark to produce a quality image. And many times museums and landmarks have policies in effect that prohibit taking pictures or videos. continue
